Dog Leashes and Collars - An important part of dog care

Dog Leashes and Collars - An important part of dog care

A complete dog care kit can never be complete without the leash and the collar. The leash and the collar make sure that the dog stays in control of the owner and does not run free, creating havoc. In fact, most responsible dog owners have now started using leashes and collars in order to restrain their dogs. In numerous places all over the world, laws have been enacted to make sure that all dogs are kept on a leash and a collar when they are taken for walk.

Various types of leashes

There are a number of leashes available in the market such as the standard leash or the retractable leash. A standard leash is mostly used for basic training and day to day purposes. They are made up of leather and nylon which makes them susceptible to being chewed by the dog. In such cases, a metallic chain is ideal. On the other hand a retractable leash is around 24-26 feet which is stored in a plastic container with a handle. This kind of leash provides a comfortable grip to the owner as well as allows the dog to cover more ground while still remaining in check. For those who wish to train their dogs, an adjustable leash would suit perfectly. This kind of leash is similar to a standard leash. It has several loops alongside the length of the leash which enables shortening and clasping of the leash according to the situation.

Collars

A dog collar works best when combined with a leash. It makes sure that the dog is in control in case of unruly incidents. Since the dog is supposed to wear the collar for a long time, one should make sure that the collar is comfortable and not too tight or too loose. Collars are usually adjustable hence it should not be too difficult to find the right fit for your dog. The tip to remember while purchasing one for your dog is that the collar should be right in the middle of the dog's neck and the owner should be able to slip in his two fingers underneath the collar without slipping the collar over the dog's ears. This trick ensures that the collar is comfortable and not too tight.

There are various kinds of collars available in the market today such as canvas, leather and nylon. Most owners tend to choose the leather collar due its elegant appearance and strength. But the downside of the leather collar is that they tend to develop a strange odor after persistent use. For those who have small dogs, the nylon collar would be the right choice since it is lightweight and durable.

Another thing to remember is that all dog collars have tags which contain information regarding their vaccinations and identifications. These tags can help in finding and identifying the dog in case he or she gets lost. Hence one should always remember to update information on the tag as and when required.
